Fillings, Inlays, and Onlays
Dental fillings are a long-lasting, durable restoration used to repair a decayed, cracked, or fractured tooth. There are two types of dental fillings–Silver amalgam metal fillings and tooth-colored composite fillings, which are used to reshape and strengthen a tooth’s structure after decay is removed.
An inlay or onlay is often the best option for restoring a tooth that suffers damage that’s too extensive to be treated with a regular filling, but not quite enough to warrant a full crown. Unlike dental fillings, onlays and inlays are indirect restorations. This means they require the assistance of a dental laboratory to create the restoration, similar to the fabrication of a crown and may require multiple visits to complete. An inlay or onlay may be preferable over the long-term because more natural tooth is left versus a full crown.
